There are several very informative websites on Fort Myers and the surrounding area. In particular we would recommend visiting the Lee Island Coast site which provides a huge amount of information.

Detailed below are some of the places in the area here we have visited, often on much more than one occasion and we would recommend giving consideration to:

Beaches
Within a short distance of our home you will find an assortment of beaches from the vibrant Fort Myers beach with pure white sand, bars and restaurants and the best beach for water sports- jet skis, parascending, water skiing etc. To get away from it all south of Fort Myers beach your find the secluded Lover’s Key with equally pristine sand and clear water but little in the way of facilities and few people.

The beaches on Sanibel Island are regularly featured as being some of the best beaches in the world and are renowned for amazing array of shells washed up on them. Again most are quiet, even at the peak tourist seasons. One of our favourites is Bowman’s beach, to the north of the island, at which we haven’t failed to spot dolphin yet!

Shopping             Fort Myers beach
Within the Fort Myers area you will find an array of shops and malls which will suit all tastes and pockets.

In downtown Fort Myers(15 mins) the Edison Mall and the Bell Tower Mall host a variety of shops and restaurants. The former includes Sears, JC Penneys and Burdines department stores.

Within a 5 minute drive, on the road to Sanibel, the Tanger Outlet Center offers a range of factory stores including Gap, Reebok, Levi, OshKosh, Samsonite and many more.

Down the I75 on the edge of Fort Myers (30 mins) is the largest outlet centre in SW Florida, Miromar Outlets. With over 100 different stores and restaurants a visit here is a must for any serious shopper.

Wildlife
A visit to Florida isn’t complete without taking time out to appreciate the amazing marine and birdlife.

The Ding Darling reserve on Sanibel Island offers an excellent opportunity to observe dolphins, manatee, alligator and a host of permanent and migratory birds within a safe environment. Tour the reserve on foot, by bicycle, in the car or for the ultimate experience take a canoe trip (with or without a guide) which can be hired at Tarpon Bay.

Further afield the Babcock Wilderness Park is well worth a visit if you wish to experience the trill of meeting panthers, bison, birds and dozens of wild alligators face to face. Swamp buggies carry you through unspoiled pinewoods, fresh water marsh, and sections of the Telegraph Cypress Swamp.

Just over an hour’s drive south of Fort Myers are The Everglades. There are many ways to explore the swamps and view the wildlife. Certainly the world renowned airboat rides should not be missed.

Sports
As well as golf Fort Myers is the home of the Everblades ice hockey team and The Miracles baseball team.

Restaurants
With such vast number of restaurants in the area it is difficult to list all the various alternatives however we recommend reviewing our visitors book in our home for up to date recommendations. A few restaurants though which we particularly enjoy are:

Right on the corner entrance to Beachwalk Isles you'll find Biscotti's, the best ice cream and coffee bar for many miles. Free of charge Wi-Fi internet access is available for those wishing to use their laptop.

The Bridge- just before Fort Myers Beach especially for the ‘live' reggae on a Sunday afternoon and evening. Live music at weekends can be found at the waterfront Parrot Key Caribbean Grill and on occasions 'crab racing'! Nearby is the Pinchers Crab Shack which offers excellent seafood. If sushi appeals, several excellent reports have been noted by visitors to Blu.

Iguana Mia- in Fort Myers always a fun atmosphere and terrific Mexican food.

On Captiva Island the popular Mucky Duck is great fun, very reasonably priced and literally a stone's throw from the beach. Nearby are the Keylime Bistro and the popular RC Otter's.

Other Attractions
As well as the beaches children can’t fail to enjoy the Sunsplash Waterpark on Cape Coral (20 minutes) or the smaller waterpark just off Fort Myers Beach. The Imaginarium is an interesting science and technology museum. The excellent Shell Museum on Sanibel is equally fascinating for young and old. Lakes Park is only a short journey from our home and is particularly aimed at younger children- the train ride, especially at Halloween, Christmas and Easter, should not be missed!

There are three mini/ crazy golf courses nearby. Try Smugglers Cove and feed alligators just before you start your round.

Of historic interest is  the Edison- Ford Estate which is 15 minutes from our home. As well as their homes there is a laboratory and museum dedicated to the work of the famous inventors and a botanical garden.
